"The Wastes are contested ground. At one time or another they have been held by all of the great powers of Parabola: none have been able to keep the Wastes. The land rejects its occupiers. It is said that it makes itself so very ugly to ward off those who would lay claim to it. It is said that it waits for a power who has long been lost or perhaps has not made themselves known yet."[1]
The Wastes of Want are a hot and arid[2] region of Parabola, riddled with the scars of past battles.[3] This desolate plain[4] rejects any attempts to claim it - whether by cats, Fingerkings, or anyone else - as if it waits for a true claimant to step forth.[1] It lies next to the Hanging Mountains,[5] a rare constant feature of Parabola, which divides the Wastes from the Wanting Way to prevent the recurrence of "a great war."[6]
The only known landmark in the Wastes is the Shrine of Wastes, a temple that serves as a site of purification for travelers heading down the Writhing River.[7]
