"Coral that glimmers as if moonlit. It makes marvellous jewellery or terribly expensive tea."[1]

"Of course, you think. They broke from the Shining Mind: they have its vitality, but not its weariness or experience."[2]

Scintillack is glowing coral found across the Unterzee that serves as a trade commodity and as the main export of Port Cecil.[3][4]

An Enchanting Glow[]

This variety of coral is known for its moon-like glow, and is used in jewelry and extremely luxurious tea.[1] It can also be used in snuff,[5] if snorting fire is suited to one's tastes,[6] but said snuff is questionably legal at best.[7] As an aside, scintillack may also "scream" when it is burnt.[8]

Until recently, scintillack was dangerous to harvest; breaking off the coral directly could result in acid burns and blindness, and as such was illegal. Furthermore, searching for stray scintillack deposits without proper precautions could lead to madness, as the harvester might hallucinate the scintillack beads resembling eyes: eyes that monitored their every move, their every sin, and their every thought.[2] The substance's dangers continued after harvest as well; the scintillack chess sets used in Port Cecil could be dangerously engrossing, especially when observed too closely, to the point of disadvantage while playing with them.[9]

All of this changed when the Principles of Coral let go of its sentience and its grip on its territory.[10] With its dangers dispelled, Iron & Misery has begun commercially mining scintillack, stripping the Principles of Coral of their silvery growths. That said, miners may still be vulnerable to a disease called sparklung, caused by inhaling coral dust.[11]

In addition to Port Cecil, scintillack deposits are a common sight at Pigmote Isle.[12] The island is home to a closely guarded lump of blue scintillack that is sought after by many other factions of the Unterzee.[13]

Blue Scintillack[]

"It blazes with apocyanic radiance. Wars have been fought for less."[14]

A Lump of Blue Scintillack.

Blue scintillack is an extremely rare and coveted substance that peppers the wilds of the Unterzee. It is most notable for emitting tremendous amounts of apocyanic light,[14] which can be spotted even from far away; this light may remind an observer of the lost sky of the Surface, or even the light of the heavens themselves.[15] Due to its scarcity and unique properties, blue scintillack is highly sought after and sometimes fought over,[16] often through forms of subterfuge or even outright war.[14]
