"Hallowmas is one of London's older festivals. Londoners don masks - owl, bear, bat, skull - and trade confessions. Some secrets are buried. Some escape."
Attendants[]
The seven Attendants to Hallowmas are archetypal figures, each representing a specific sin. They accept confessions of sin from Londoners, both their own and those of others, possibly restricted to the sin they embody. Each has a specific persona and regalia, with at least the latter being old enough to predate the First City[1]; it is unclear, however, whether the physical costume itself is that old or if it has been remade, as well as if the specific details of the persona have changed in that timespan.
At the start of Hallowmas, seven people are selected by the Masters and brought to the Bazaar, assigned to play the role and persona of an Attendant for that year. When the holiday ends, the seven return to the Bazaar and "unburden themselves of the city's guilt"; however, the exact means by which they do this is unspecified.
The Seven Attendants, along with their corresponding sin:
- False-Student (Whimsy): Described as having a mirror-eyed mask and feathered eyelashes[2] [3] and giving lessons to those who confess enough sins to him[4]
- Glasswhisper (Curiosity): Described as having a mirror-eyed feline mask with velvet fur, furred gloves and a grey cloak that glistens like oil [5] [6] [7]
- the Scarlet Physic (Impropriety): Described as having a long red physician's mask, carmine robes and silver hooks for hands [8][9]
- Hammerstrike (Violence): Described as having a cumbersome bear costume, rancid and poorly tanned [10] [11]
- Smiling Jester (Guile): Described as having a large rust-colored cloak and a fox mask with a lolling, fat, moist, pink tongue [12] [13] [14]
- Knight of Numbers (Pride): Described as wearing wooden armor, with a bascinet helmet [15] [16]
- Fool's Apostate (Faith): NO DESCRIPTION SPECIFIED [17]
